Congratulations to Priya Kearney and Raegan Pallas, winners of the Best Student Poster Award for their poster presentations at this year’s Linguistic Day (March 29, 2024)! Priya Kearney: “How to Diversify Speech Language Pathologists’ Accent Perception”; Raegan Pallas: “An Acoustic Investigation of Arabic and English Oral Stops.” The prize for this competition is a year’s membership in the Linguistics Society of America or the Acoustical Society of America.

New Data Analytics Focus for the MA in Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics will offer a new Data Analytics focus for the MA in Linguistics beginning Fall 2024. The focus (12 semester hours of coursework beyond the core requirements) is designed to train students in the basics of experimental and linguistics-focused data analytics to better prepare them for career opportunities in industry as well as advanced graduate work in Linguistics. Two courses form the core of this focus: LING:4291/4292 Statistical and Experimental Methods in Linguistics I/II; additional coursework is provided in areas such as statistics, experimental design, and human-computer interaction.
